Mike Wieringo was a great guy, you’ve probably heard that if you’ve heard anything about him.

Mike was a great artist too but you already know that if you’ve seen any his work, his Spider-Man is perfect. He wouldn’t think so but I think he nailed the essence of most of the characters he worked on.

Mike went through the grinder that is big two comics and while he always liked that stuff, he’d really light up when he talked about some new cartoonist he’d just discovered. He loved indie comic art and stuff outside the norm. When Mike was feeling burnt out he’d search for artistic inspiration online and I’d get jpgs sent to my inbox. Finding new artists to freak out about was the basis of our friendship (besides being a huge fan of his but he didn’t want to talk about that much, haha) and I truly miss how excited he would get over his latest discovery and how he seemed like he was going to burst when he shared it. It was such a thrill when Mike joined DeviantArt and occasionally added something I colored to his favorites. Little things like that help when you are making comics in solitude. We did a couple of little things together but talked about bigger things, of course we assumed we’d have time to get to them.

Working on paying tribute to Mike in the new Tellos hardcovers and at HeroesCon this year has stirred up a lot of old feelings, happy and sad ones. Pretty neat that an award is named after him now too, hope these things help people remember how great he was.

2017 is the 35th anniversary of HeroesCon. I did some logo exploration to celebrate that and hopefully fix a few issues I have with the original show logo. None of these ended up being used but I thought it might be fun to see. So impressed that Shelton Drum has kept this show going and growing since 1982. Here’s to 35 more!
